OBJECTIVE: Creation of a trompe-l’oeil featuring an architectural décor including the study of draped fabric, a water feature and a landscape.

TRAINER: Victor Goikoetxea
LEVEL OF PARTICIPANTS: This advanced training course is designed for people who have completed the level 1 and 2 training courses or who have very good drawing and painting skills.
OBJECTIVE: The Master Class provides the elementary rules of architectural and natural perspective and shows how to apply them to a trompe-l’oeil painting. The theme of this Trompe-l’œil is the representation of a contemporary interior with a view over an urban landscape including a human figure.

TRAINER: Pierre Chaumont

This technique observes very precise rules: for example, the subject is represented life-size, no element shown is cut off by the frame, and the signature of the artist is concealed in one of the painting’s features. This art requires extreme meticulousness and a perfect mastery of drawing and painting techniques.
LEVEL OF PARTICIPANTS: This training course is designed for people with very good drawing and painting skills.
OBJECTIVE: Creation of a trompe-l’œil painting on a coped wood panel of approximately 70cm x 60cm

Ornamentation

TRAINER: Mona Elyzabé
Ornamentation is the representation of decorative elements in various forms (floral, geometric) according to the period and country of origin. These techniques can be applied to architectural elements, wood panels and textiles. The designs are painted, sculpted or otherwise applied to the materials of choice.
LEVEL OF PARTICIPANTS: All levels
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this training course is to learn to use shading and light to imitate the three-dimensional effect of various decorative elements (moulding, friezes, arabesques, low relief, and so on).

Folding screen

This technique has been used for centuries in a great variety of ways. Folding screens are mobile elements that can be used within a room to create a private space, conceal something, or simply act as a partition. Since the 20th century, the folding screen has principally become a decorative element. In the last few years, folding screens have been used by designers and decorators in new ways.
LEVEL OF PARTICIPANTS: All levels
OBJECTIVE: Creation of a trompe-l’oeil décor on three hinged panels (each 1.5m x 0.50m) made of wood or canvas stretched over a frame.

TRAINER: Mona Elisabé

Since antiquity, painters have sought to imitate the textures around them. In the 15th century, the Flemish masters were the first to achieve the illusion of absolute reality using oil painting, a technique which was brand new at the time.

OBJECTIVE: Creation of texture effects on small supports: imitations of mosaic tiles, stone, frescoes, tapestries, rusted ironwork, bronze, and so on.

Strappo fresco

Training course presentation

TRAINER: Anne-Marie Cherrier
After creating a fresco painting technique on a wall using natural pigments on fresh lime-and-sand plaster, the fresco is lifted away and applied to a canvas.
LEVEL OF PARTICIPANTS: All levels
OBJECTIVE: The creation of four to five strappo frescoes (50cm x 50 cm) with an antique patina for a very decorative, original effect reminiscent of Italian décors.
SUPPORT: support panels and polyester canvas
TECHNIQUE USED: tempera on lime-and-sand plaster

Anne-Marie CHERRIER

Anne-Marie Cherrier began her career as a decorative painter:

  • At the Institut Supérieur de Peinture Décorative of Paris alongside the master Yannick Guégan,
  • At the Institut Guégan in Britanny and the Centre Européen de Formation des Artisans pour la Conservation du Patrimoine Architectural on the island of San Servolo in Venice, where she specialised in fresco painting.

Among her numerous, prestigious works:

  • Marble effect painting of a 25-metre sailboat hull for the Société Construction Navale de Bordeaux (Bordeaux Shipbuilding Society).
  • Design of an ad campaign for Citroën, blending the tradition of marble imitation with a modern approach.
  • Decoration of wine storehouses in Bordeaux area wine-growing estates.
    Fresco paintings on building façades in the Paris region.
  • Decors in a church of the Dordogne and in a number of private homes.

Victor GOIKOETXEA

Victor Goikoetxea, an emblematic Spanish artist of the contemporary figurative painting world, was born in 1965 in Gipuzkoa in the Basque Country. He currently resides in Hernmani, Gipuzkoa, where he has set up a workshop. From his earliest childhood, he showed a passion for painting. He studied the masters and decided to specialize in decorative painting. After studying in art schools in Brittany, Paris, London, Malaga, Barcelona and Madrid, he finished his training in Italy. As a graduate, he continued travelling to immerse himself in the artistic styles of various countries.

A tireless worker always on the lookout for new techniques and new experiences, he continues to take inspiration from the civilizations that he discovers, and endeavours to express their feeling through landscapes and architecture, which he represents on a large scale. Early on, he set himself apart from traditional artists by focusing on a new realism in figurative mural painting. His remarkable works provoke both questions and admiration, and leave no viewer indifferent.

Pierre CHAUMONT

A native of Libourne born in 1936, this self-taught artist began learning about painting as a teenager. After high school, he worked as a caster in a foundry. In 1957 he entered the gendarmerie, which left him less time to paint than in his previous position. He therefore went into the private sector and was able to devote the rest of his time to figurative painting.

In 1981 after visiting an exhibition on a Trompe-l’oeil theme in Villeneuve-sur-Lot, he decided to adopt this technique. His reputation gradually grew until one day Henri Cadiou invited him to exhibit at the Grand Palais with the “Trompe-l’œil Réalité” group of artists.

From that day on, he has participated in all the great shows and has received a number of awards for his work.

“My work is not dependent upon any particular intellectual approach, and does not contain hidden messages, except to promote the virtues of applied technique to the general public.”

Mona ELIZABÉ

Mona Elizabé expresses the infinite romanticism of a refined, feminine universe, and she does so with the generosity of an artist oriented toward sharing her talents and passing along her skills to reveal those of others.

TRAINING

  • Studied the arts of fashion and historical costumes.
  • Created a variety of fabric and canvas designs.
  • Fashion design – 1st prize Le Dauphiné
  • Learned Renaissance techniques (tempura, glaze) under P.Y. Gianini.
  • Attended Trompe-l’œil school under Y.Guégan.
  • Attended IPEDEC Paris with Pascal Amblard.
  • Learned fresco painting, furniture decoration and perspective painting in Italy.

WORKS PUBLISHED
Collaborated with Y.Guégan on his last book about trompe-l’œil art, published by Norton in the United States.

WORK

  • Created trompe-l’œil décors in the Paris region and throughout France.
  • Painted theatre backdrops.
  • Coordinated activities for Les Journées Européennes du Patrimoine.
  • Participated in the creation of the Périgueux-based Musée du trompe-l’œil, creation of décors.
  • Worked as an instructor in trompe-l’œil techniques at the Périgueux-based Musée du trompe-l’œil and in the workshops until 2009.
  • Exhibited individual work (pastel, oil, trompe-l’oeil, and other techniques) in Paris and elsewhere in France.
  • Created décors for various shops.
